Nasty sound in 5th and trouble engaging in 3rd...95 yj i6

My 95 yj I6 seems to have developed a clutch problem (at least i hope
its a clutch problem, not a tranny problem). When i shift from second
into third it does not want to go, and you can hear it scrapping just
like you didnt push the clutch. When you let of the gas in 5th gear it
makes a scrapping sound and has a rough feel in the shiftr lever. The
problem is only in those 2 gears. If it is a problem with clutch how
do i get to the cluch everything i have found has been for a 93 or
older, and it says to pull the tranny, is it the same for a 95 and if
so is there any other way, also how much will it cost if i do it and
how much will cost to have a mechanic do it.

Any help appreciated
Thanks in advance, Donny

Well, you have to drop the trans and tcase to get to the clutch. The clutch
lives in the space between the motor and the trans. You can pull the motor
or drop the trans. Most guys that are working at home in the garage will opt
to drop the trans to gain access to the clutch. Actually, most guys anywhere
will drop the trans to get to the clutch, but it is *possible* to pull the
motor instead.

Hi Don,
Fortunately, if it it is a clutch hydraulic slave problem the YJ
moved it outside the bellhousing after '93. Have you checked the clutch
reservoir for fluid? Most people with a clutch problem complain about
the first, and reverse shift while stopped, rather than third, and
fifth. Usually noise associated with fifth gear is the transmission
input bearing. Take to a transmision shop, and let them test drive.
