motor or tranny?

Hello folks. I've got a 92 xj (116k on body) with a motor from a 96 gc
(4.0). The other day I noticed a tick, like a fan cover was hitting a blade,
but alas not that easy. It seems to be coming from the motor close to the
firewall. Oil pressure is good, temp is good, idles fine (other than the
noise) and seems to be running on all six, but it is getting louder. When I
put it in reverse it gets very loud. I hope it's not the motor, I bought
this thing last Nov with 101k on it for $1100, and we love it. At 106k it
blew a motor, I'm assuming the previous owner didn't treat it very well. I
had the new motor put in (it was a bitch), it had 80k on it and have been
putting rottella in it every 3k since, and now this. I can't afford to put
another motor in it or even another xj right now (in the process of buying
our first house), but this vehicle is our only car so please pray to the
Jeep Gods and tell me this isn't a dead truck. It also goes in and out of
part, full, and low with no problems.

Re: motor or tranny?

Curious how you pinpointed the area where the noise is coming from; just
by ear? If it's getting louder, it might be the popping sound of exhaust
(like from a gasket or perhaps a valve). Does it only make the noise while
driving? Get louder with acceleration? Is it steady, intermittent with
warm up or in neutral? What kind of tranny/xfer case?

If the sound diminshes as the vehicle warms up, I can almost guarantee
that it is a noisy lifter. What kind of oil are you running?
