Re: mechanical fuel pump - 73 cj5
You may not need a pump, there are a couple of small holes that act
normally as breathers. If your oil isn't over full and smells of
gasoline, then I'm betting your Positive Crankcase Ventilation or it's
port under the carburetor is clogged. With the engine running test that
part by holding the PCV in your hand and place your thumb over the
opening, you should feel the vacuum such your thumb to it and the valve
fall loosely and rattler around in it's body loosely. Pull the valve and
the vacuum leak should be so great as to not allow the engine to run. It
is normal for the PCV's intake port to completely carbon shut in a
couple of year, use a drill bit and roll it in your finger to ream it
out to clear it.

Re: mechanical fuel pump - 73 cj5
A half hour labor is highway robbery for that pump job, let alone 2
hours.....
That really sounds like a pinched elbow in the PCV line to me or a
broken oil pressure sender though. The PCV tube has a molded elbow in
it, it can collapse under high vacuum situations when it gets old.
Did any oil get in the air filter?
The gas pump gasket will just leak oil, the fan can blow it around, but
it will be localized. Not a pressure fitting there and kinda obvious.
Oil pressure sender at the top bolt can do that, it is under pressure,
so can a blown valve cover gasket because the fan blows that, which is
also PCV related.
