Hi Mike,
I doesn't take much of a hit to jam the piston. You may not be able to see it. But a thirty second test would to remove that plug, spring and see if you can get the piston out. Out in the desert I drilled a hole in the other end and took a nail and beat it back so a friend could get back home before the oil filter blew off, again. Of course plugging that hole with a screw.
