Low milage oil changes?
My '95 YJ is not a daily driver. I usually take it out for a drive
every weekend and off road about once a month. It gets driven about
1000 miles per year, at least half of that off-road. This means the
oil would get changed every three years according to the schedule. Is
this OK or should it be done once a year regardless of the milage?
Thanks

Re: Low milage oil changes?
Normally the oil gets contaminted with engine wear and combustion by
products as well as breakdown of the oil itself. Hence the reccomended
mileage changes. My YJ sees about the same kind of useage (1000 to 2000
miles per year), gets stored in the winter so it doesn't see the cold
weather starts but it still gets it's share of the acids and moisture
that kill oil. I've just taken to changing the oil and filter just
before winter storage, sits with the clean oil for 5 months.

I believe you need to read the schedule a little closer. It states
every X number of miles 'or' every X number of months.
I do mine once a year anyway if I have no miles on it and at 3K miles or
sooner depending on how 'hard' those miles were.

Thanks for the replies. Once a year sounds like a good way to do it.
