Re: Labour Day Weekend Ontario Canada Bush Run Call. Trip Report!
We had a good time!
Only Nick from Montreal showed up though... Poor guy, I can't off
road so he was a bit bored....
We spent most of the time hanging out at camp. We did get a chance to
drive a bit to get wood over in the logging area scrap heap.
The moving around actually made me feel good, loosened up muscles, so
that was a bonus.
Friday was a long day..... We woke to the ground 'really' shaking from
thunder and a serious downpour. Not bad, only one corner of the bottom
blanket got wet.
Set a tarp up over the cooking area and it was clear from noon on.
Figures...
So we went out to get supplies on Friday and half way out the brakes
felt strange. I stopped and checked the fluid, it was ok, but a bit
down it seemed, so I continued because they came back to feeling good
and got to town with no problems.
Half way back I had to brake for a speed zone in a town and
screech!!!!!!
So I use the gears and pull over and get under for a look.
Well.... I am looking and looking and for the life of me can't see an
inside brake pad????
Ok.... so I got off into a chip truck stand and took the wheel off. Ya
right, like that one last lug nut just isn't coming off. So me with the
messed up back managed to snap my cross bar tire wrench. Turned my L
wrench to a pretzel and borrowed another L wrench from the chip stand
guy and borrowed his high lift jack to use the handle as a pipe
extension on the damn nut. Got it that time, but tore a muscle in my
ribs in the process. Made for a sore weekend, but not too sore to enjoy
myself just fine.
So I get a good look and the freaking inside brake pad is up and gone!!!
WTF??? I found about an inch and a half of one end still in there and
the caliper piston resting on the rotor???
That's a first for me!
So here we are in the middle of nowhere gas station at 5 PM on Friday
where everything closes at 5 and a gent and his wife in a Cherokee
stop. I had just talked ot him at the liquor store back in town, he has
a CJ5 and an old Scout with dana 44's he is going to put in it.
So he takes me to his place and we try to get a pad off his parts
Cherokee, but the doesn't have the reverse torx socket to undo the
sliders.
Well, this guy drove me an hour each way to a Canadian Tire store!
Pretty cool. He wouldn't even take gas money, I started to mention it
and he just waved me off saying pass on the favor. I have in the past
and for sure will continue it.
We got to the meeting place in time for Nick and decided to take the
'short' route into camp. It saves 20 minutes but is a rougher road.
Lots
of rain so all the puddles are full.
We are almost 3/4 the way there when one of the 'puddles' looked a
little suspect. I stopped and eyeballed it and it is only one Jeep
length long and there is a Jeep with a winch behind me so I went for it.
Oops! Sunk the Cherokee almost up to the top of the headlights and tail
light on one side and hit a wall. Backed up and another wall. Tore the
end of the bumper off when it dropped into the hole.
Nick winched me out. Man, the door leaked and filled up, the carpets
are mud, mud was pouring out the door speaker into the floor and filled
it. What a mess.
Also the first time ever the Cherokee has been on the receiving end of a
tow. It always seems to be the tow vehicle.
We had to back track, it was a causeway through a marsh with no trees if
Nick got stuck.
Oh well, had to drive a bypass trail that took an extra hour. Didn't
really hurt my feelings as I wasn't driving anywhere else that weekend.

any photos up anyway, will try later today and post the link.
