Koenig winch
I've got a Koenig winch ???????? don't know what the model or specs
are on it. The only numbers I can find on it are; 524 and 49064. I believe this unit would be classified as a PTO winch since it currently driven by a hydraulic motor (oilfield application). I'm wondering if anyone has a book on this winch or can at least tell me what the specs are? One of the problems is that it turns extremely slowly and I think I can easily fix that by installing a small GPM hydraulic motor. I've tried contacting RKI but they were of no help what so ever. They agreed that they used to manufacture this winch but they would rather sell me a new unit than assist with some information on the original unit. Any assistance, direction to a web site or contact info would be appreciated. |

This is where the hydraulic motor is bolted and coupled to the winch. I would like to attach a photo but I don't know how!!! |

Re: Koenig winch
It is not a PTO. PTO means Power Take Off, and this power source is a
mechanical connection to the drive train via the transfer case. Your winch is a hydraulic winch. It runs by hydraulic means via a pump that is driven by a motor. The pump could be a PTO design, but typically is simply connected to the crankshaft by a belt. In an automotive application -- such as your Jeep -- a hydraulic winch is often run by the power steering pump. The beauty of a hydraulic winch over an electric one is that it can run pretty much forever without stopping, wheras an electric winch needs to rest frequently because it gets hot. The downside of the hydraulic winch is that if it is your own Jeep that needs to be recovered, the engine must be able to run for the winch to work. As a practical matter, the recovery operation while offroading is usually far shorter than the duty cycle of the winch -- you can get the vehicle back on its wheels long before the winch gets hot and needs to rest. An electric winch is well suited for self recovery because it can work even if the vehicle is belly up, and the engine will not run.
