Basic 'no grind' troubleshooting... when you turn
the switch, does it click? Is there a small click,
or a big clack?
No click = no excitation to relay/solenoid
Neutral switch? Clutch pedal switch?
Bad switch/relay/wire?
small click = relay being excited, no joy to
big solenoid... bad relay or connection?
big clack = big solenoid moving, but no
current through it (clean connection/
rebuild solenoid/replace starter)
If you can get it to fail at home, then this
would be an easy fix for someone with
a voltmeter.

Re: jeep wont start
My '96 is as we speak having a "new" starter installed. This will be the 2nd
one replaced under warranty. All I can get for the '96 is rebuilts. Lemme
see, this one lasted about 4 months, it's predecessor about 10 months. Went
out this morning to go pick up some parts for the boat ... I got one "click"
out it, then nothing. The previous one did the click click click ... whack
it with a hammer might start thing. My mechanic who is 2 blocks away,
actually came over, crawled under, and checked it out. My money's on you
need a new starter.
