Check your engine and tranny mounts.
If one is broken, the shifter can bind up against the body.
Second, make sure it is full of fluid.

Model/year of vehicle?
"to go into 1st and 2nd gear" under what circumstances... sitting still or
moving?... motor running or not?...
down-shifting?... up-shifting?...

You don't say which tranny you have but if the lube level is where it
should be (also clean and not full of water ) then it's probably
either the syncros worn out (rolling) or a dragging clutch (stopped).
