Jeep stuck in Part Time 4WD
 

Hi:

While going downhill accross a patch of ice, I shifted to Part Time 4WD
on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It all went well until when I tried to shift
it back to 2WD, no matter what I did, the display kept saying Part Time
4WD. I did I few things I saw on this forum, going reverse, put in
Neutral, nothing changed. I also read that uneven tire pressure my
prevent the transmission from shifting back to normal. Should I take it
to Firestone and have them look at it from the "Tire Pressure" angel or
take it to Ammco, the Transmission Specialist? I mean it drives fine
but I have read that on flat dry surface, you should not drive in Part
Time 4WD mode. Please help.

It's the backing in reverse a couple of feet that releases the gear
bind, or visa versa if you were backing. Sounds like you have tried
that. Indicating it may be the vacuum light switch that operates the
warning light jammed, try squirting a little WD-40 in that line where it
enter the cowl, I hear about the light height:

Gives us some more information, like the year, engine, and whether
your shifter has a full time position. As I'm just guessing your light
is controlled by vacuum like this YJ transfer that also controls the
front axle:

start by look up into the transfer case, front driver's side for the
switch, and follow the lines, the one that goes up near the battery.
