Recreated recently on Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel.
They couldn't get real JATO units so they substituted 4
rocket motors. Bummer, but they didn't have a good speed
measurement on how fast the Chevy got up to, but it easily
outran the chase helicopter before coming to a rather
unspectacular stop, unharmed.

I listen the talk show host Art Bell, one night years ago read the
story as if he was there watching the brake drums and tires explode as
the Chevy becomes airborne and smashes into a cliff. I think we where
all laughing as if this might be a good way to go out.
