Strange thing is, that before it went to the mechanic the fan definately did
NOT come on in the acc. position. The mechanic claims well it's working right
now.

From what I have seen all the AMC Jeeps have the fan as an accessory.
Jerry says the Chrysler Jeep doesn't.

AMC designed some of the CJ7, the YJ and the XJ. I know my 88 XJ is
like that. I don't know about the after 91 ones when Chrysler started
changing things.

You 'can' still turn the sucker off by putting the vent control to off.

I don't think I've actaully been inside a YJ. Does the heater control
(not the fan switch, but the heater/vent/etc selector) not have an "off"
position, like it does in the Cherokee?
