Gee, nobody better tell some of the folks that come on Jeep trips with
me that.... I have been totally surprised every time someone tells me they have the 4 banger under the hood. They kept up with me at legal speeds on the highway and had no issues at all off road. I've had both. My '85 CJ7 (purchased with 900 miles on it) had a 4 cyl.
with a 4spd tranny, and it was pretty gutless on the hwy, if loaded. Two people and a touch of camping gear kept me in third gear on any incline at hwy speeds. I'm not saying I'd NEVER buy a 4 banger again, but it would have to be a pretty sweet 4 cyl. CJ to steer me away from the 6 cyls. Wrangler? Fuggedaboudit! Too many nice six cyl. Wranglers around to mess with 4 bangers. JMHO.
