Metal. The handle likes to vibrate, but it could be anything from
not latching closed enough, strut rattle, hinge rattle, etc.
Reassembly with a tube of contact cement usually shuts most up.

I just cut a piece of foam rubber about 3" thick and 8" long and place it
inside lower corners.

I found the hatch squeek on an older cherokee (88) to be the trim panel.
Replaced the plastic retainers for about $2 and used two way tape where I
saw the rub marks indicating the source of the noise. Perfectly quiet.
