That's right, the computer will use those inputs to alter ignition timing for
the current conditions.

Not being an engineer, I'd be interested in seeing how they come up with this
stuff, but I don't think it would be worth trying to re-invent the wheel. You
can bet the manufacturers do as much as they can to get the best combustion they
can already.
