Ok....here's one for ya. I bought a 97 Cherokee Sport awhile back and
it had a squeaky belt. So I decided to do a little tune up. Anyway
while I changed the plugs and wire for an extra mile per gallon or so,
I sprayed the belt with belt conditioner to get rid of the squeak.

All said and done took her out for a spin. As with everyone I opened
her up to see how the plug and response would be and it started to
make a clacking sound. It will ease off as I reach an slower speed
but still there.

Felt of the belt and it is pure gum. Took and cleaned the engine and
clack stopped for a short time till the water is off the belt and it
starts again.

As for running it runs fine. I've felt for the timing chain and
should feel a peck or something....nothing. Other than the water pump
I can't figure out what it could be other than something with the
belt.

I'm a newbie as for auto repair....simple things I can do but other
than that not!

I'm putting on a new belt this weekend but has anyone ever experienced
that?

 

I think we all have to learn that these so called belt dressings
are for worn out washing machines ONLY! And I wouldn't use it there!

I think we all have to learn that these so called belt dressings
are for worn out washing machines ONLY! And I wouldn't use it there!

Belt dressing seems to only like fords... if you spray too much belt
dressing the belt will turn to gum, more so then belt dressing you want to
spray a dow corning silicone spray (liquid), it will clean and condition
the belt.
