Help: '78 Cj7 258 EGR problems
Subject Vehicle 1978 CJ-7, 258 inline six, Carter yf carb
PROBLEM with EGR setup
-----------------------
CJ runs fine when it's engine is cold since the CTO stops vacuum to
the EGR valve.
It idles fine hot or cold.
When engine is hot and I step on the gas the motor hesitates and the
engine delivers about zero power or stalls. I can't even drive it
unless I rev the engine way up and only partially engage the
clutch(but not fully engage clutch) and then it goes really slow and
ultra gutless.
TEST
--------
I tested the EGR valve and it operates when vacuum applied as it
should.
MY SETUP
---------
I have the EGR ported vac from the upper rear vac port of the carb
running to the EGR CTO switch then to the EGR valve.
That is all standard. But I do have one thing that is non standard or
strange, the EGR valve has two ports/nipples on it please see my
little diagram below (the EGR is round but I couldn't make the diagram
that way here)
___
/EGR\
port 1 >>> ===(VALVE)=== <<< port2
\___/
port 1 is connected to the outside port of the EGR CTO switch. The
EGR CTO inside port is connected to the carb vacuum port for the EGR.
I have capped/sealed port 2 on the EGR valve(if I leave port 2 open
the EGR valve never works because the vacuum in port 1 is just lost to
the atmosphere through port 2 - But the motor runs good)
NOTE: port 1 and port 2 have no valve or restriction between them in
anyway.. They are just two nipples off the EGR instead of the one
nipple setup I have seen in the manuals and on other 70's CJ's.
PLEASE HELP
-----------------
I figure one of two things is going on
1) I don't have a vac connection to a component that port 2 should be
connected to.
2) I have the wrong EGR valve.
I have looked at several manuals and diagrams but all show a single
ported EGR valve.
Can anyone email me or send me a link to an EGR vacuum hose routing
diagram for a '78 CJ 258 that shows a 2 port/nipple EGR valve and
where it hooks up to.
HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER SEEN A TWO PORTED EGR VALVE on a 70's 258?
'78 was the last year before the smog air system and a bunch of other
smog stuff was added maybe I have an oddball 1/2 year or I have once
again been subjected to a famous jeep multi year vehicle that used
parts from a different model year just because they had them at the
plant.
Sorry for the length
Thanks for your help!

Re: Help: '78 Cj7 258 EGR problems

It 'sure' sounds to me like you have the wrong one in there. It sounds
like it is either opening too fast (worn out or broken spring) or it is
too big internally letting too much exhaust back in.
One other thing to check for maybe is a vacuum leak at the carb base or
at the intake manifold gasket. You can spray some carb cleaner along
the gaskets when running and if the engine stumbles you have found a
leak.
The EGR can give it fits if it already is leaky somewhere.
Other than that, if you don't need the thing for emissions, I would just
leave it shut off.
By the by, do you have a charcoal canister in there with a vacuum
operated purge valve? If so, maybe that is where the second nipple is
supposed to go. The canisters also turn on with ported vacuum via the
CTO valve.

The canisters also turn on with ported vacuum via the
CTO valve.

Don't know if you have the right valve or not, but I'd guess the 2nd nipple
should go to a transducer. Blocking that nipple is just allowing too much EGR.

Re: Help: '78 Cj7 258 EGR problems
Hi Paul.
Looking for one and found four possible for the six:

A News group with picture: http://www.vinzdecals.com/item-0702.html
I would find a coin or something to plug the POS, find places to
hook the vacuum hoses to also plugged, just so it looks like it's hooked
up. I live in the toughest SMOG inspection area, San Diego, and you may
see by my Bronco's certification the Exhaust Gases Recirculation valve
must pass visual, but is not actually tested:
