This is true only if the header is improperly designed for its application.
A properly designed header is as critical as picking the right camshaft. You
are right that some headers will hurt power in the desired RPM range. For a
4x4 vehicle, longer tubes with a small diameter and a long collector are the
best. The "shorty" or block hugger headers are all but useless. Most headers
are built based on ease of manufacture and also ease of installation. If you
want to learn a lot about headers, check out http://www.headersbyed.com. He
has an information packet and cassette or CD available that explained proper
header design. I have this packet, and it is very informative. I have also
seen a few cars running his stuff, and the guy knows his exhaust headers.

manifold. It only works for sleepers, cheating, as the heat takes too
much of the energy away:
