We see this all the time on vehicles that off road. When getting muddy regularly we go through 3 or more sets of V belts a year. Even the serpentine ones can get polished up. We see this all the time on vehicles that off road. When getting muddy regularly we go through 3 or more sets of V belts a year. Even the serpentine ones can get polished up. I have had a simular problem with My 79 J20 in years past and when it did it the belt "talked" Now it does it some because steering box is worn out (or leaking internally) as pumpis still good. Just another thing on the list of things to do when I restore it one day. If he had access to a gauge he could pressure test the pump to see it it is weak.
