For less than 800 dollars, it would have to be a pretty sad piece of
junk not to be worth a closer look.

You don't mention a year, engine, etc. so some of the stuff to check
for would be difficult to note.

Even with a clapped out engine if you can twiddle a wrench and have good
junkyards, might be worth 800. Same for axles, transmission,
transfer case, etc.

You'd probably be happier with the 6 than the 4 if you highway drive,
but if you refrain from monster tires the 4 will get you there.

Glue some sand to the paint, pretend you are going desert camo.

Try driving it in sweeping circles and note any odd noises or binding
feeling. If possible, do this on mud with the 4wd and low engaged.

Oil leaks are more often from the valve cover than the main seal, but it
isn't rocket science to change the seals.

I'm not worried about the engine, brakes, etc. That is all stuff I can
fix. Where I live (Upper Michigan) rust and corrosion is the main
concern. The Jeep in in Wisconsin, but I am right on the border of
Wisconsin. It takes me 5 minutes to get across the border if I walk from
my house.

Hopefully the weather holds out today and I can go look at it, but we
are forecasted to get rain and possibly flooding here today, so it
doesn't look too promising.
