Going to look at a CJ7 to possibly buy.

I was going to wait until I made my move to my new location to buy a
Jeep, but I found one that interested me here locally.

I know to check for things like frame and body rot, but are there any
other problems inherent to the CJ7s? The Jeep almost seems like it is
too good of a deal, which is why I am kind of concerned. The body looks
to be in pretty good shape (probably redone) and it has an ugly paint
job, but the guy is selling it for $775.00 and it has a hardtop which
appears to be in good condition (again from a distance).

Actually, I don't even know if the thing runs or not, which may be why
it is so cheap, LOL. I just saw it from the road on the way to my
parents' house and haven't stopped there to look at it yet.

Either way I will look at this Jeep, and if I decide not to buy it, I
will pass the info to this group in case someone else is interested. I
will try to get some photos as well.

I got mine cheap because the Owner was told the engine was worn out
because of all the oil puking into the air filter and the bad idle
despite a new carb.

That was just a blown emissions canister. I put a compression test on
the engine in the driveway, it was great, and bought it.

Well, I am hoping this is the deal I've been looking for. It is possible
since I know this Jeep has been sitting for a while. The people that own
it built a house near my parents' place about 2 years ago, and not too
long after the place was built, the Jeep showed up and was parked behind
the house. As far as I know, it wasn't driven since it was parked there.
I always hoped the thing would come up for sale and now it has. It is
one of the ugliest Jeeps I've ever seen, due to the color of the paint
on it. It is sort of mustard yellow and looks like the color of a
tractor or something like that, but paint is easily fixed when you have
2 friends who paint vehicles. It looks solid, but I haven't seen it up
close yet. I can only hope. :)

For less than 800 dollars, it would have to be a pretty sad piece of
junk not to be worth a closer look.

You don't mention a year, engine, etc. so some of the stuff to check
for would be difficult to note.

Even with a clapped out engine if you can twiddle a wrench and have good
junkyards, might be worth 800. Same for axles, transmission,
transfer case, etc.

You'd probably be happier with the 6 than the 4 if you highway drive,
but if you refrain from monster tires the 4 will get you there.

Glue some sand to the paint, pretend you are going desert camo.

Try driving it in sweeping circles and note any odd noises or binding
feeling. If possible, do this on mud with the 4wd and low engaged.

Oil leaks are more often from the valve cover than the main seal, but it
isn't rocket science to change the seals.
