Well motor oil is some pretty mild smelling stuff unless it's burning,
Gear oil, now their's something that could be described as foul. But you
have an Auto so the only place that could be coming from is your axles...

Re: fowl oil oder from jeep
I used to have a car with a sick automatic, and every once in a while it
would buck on takeoff. Whenever it did that it would belch transmission
fluid out of the filler right onto the hot exhaust pipe on the right
side of the engine.
What made it even better is the heater was in the floor on the passenger
side and fed air by some big (leaky) air hoses that went through the
engine compartment.
As a result every time the transmission puked a big cloud of really
nasty smelling smoke would pour out from under the passenger seat.
The don't make them like that anymore <G>.

My TJ always stinks after a grease job. The rear driveshaft U-Joints
throw grease onto the muffler and it takes a few days to burn off enough
that it doesn't stink anymore.

Good point. Look for a carmel color on the muffler that will be toasted
grease. The bright side is that it's natural rust preventative.
