I have a friend with a Lexus RS350 (a Toyota Highlander in a suit), and his
clock flashed and constantly reset itself to 12:00 when the key was off for
several hours. It turned out that his battery was near end-life.
MY THEORY is that so much stuff is computer driven, that the car makers have
found that they need the owner/operators to stay on top of battery
condition. They build the clock to flash on low voltage, this gives you a
heads-up that the battery life is waning, and you can get to the battery
store before it completely goes out.
If my theory holds up -- and with exactly one example, it has -- then I
think this is an ingenious little circuit. Visit your local battery salesman
and see what he has to say about your battery condition. If your battery is
at end-life, let us know.

My friend with the Lexus had no other indication that his battery was on the
way out. I suspect you have no other indication either ...
