Inspection should tell you whether they need to be replaced or not. Also I don't know it it has been mentioned or not, but if your fan shroud is cracked anywhere it could be vibrating enough to hit the fan. If you let this go on long enough it could tear up your water pump bearings too. The thermal clutch is a round deal with heat sink fins on it, that sits between the water pump shaft and the fan. If you have one then you can turn the fan without the belt, crank and accessories turning. That could be a source of a loose fan too. You can get fan clutch eliminators at many auto parts stores. That is just a solid chunk of steel that replaces the clutch. I find that when the clutch is working it is at least innocuous, but when it quits you can't go uphil without overheating. If you go off road a lot or live on a washboard road you might consider getting a slightly smaller diameter fan. Definitely keep the shroud though, and fix what is wrong with it. What I found was, I had failed to position the tabs on the bottom of the shroud into the locator slots, allowing the shroud to be drawn into the fan blades. JS 1998 XJ |
