You say you don't feel play or slop in the fan right?
Some fans have a clutch that goes bad and causes your symptoms. If you can turn the fan when the engine is stopped, it has a clutch. If it turns free when cold and turns 'really' stiff after a 'hot' shutdown, it is working right. If there is no fan play, you have a blown engine or tranny mount likely. How rusty is the body? Inspection should tell you whether they need to be replaced or not. Also I don't know it it has been mentioned or not, but if your fan shroud is cracked anywhere it could be vibrating enough to hit the fan. If you let this go on long enough it could tear up your water pump bearings too. The thermal clutch is a round deal with heat sink fins on it, that sits between the water pump shaft and the fan. If you have one then you can turn the fan without the belt, crank and accessories turning. That could be a source of a loose fan too. You can get fan clutch eliminators at many auto parts stores. That is just a solid chunk of steel that replaces the clutch. I find that when the clutch is working it is at least innocuous, but when it quits you can't go uphil without overheating. If you go off road a lot or live on a washboard road you might consider getting a slightly smaller diameter fan. Definitely keep the shroud though, and fix what is wrong with it.
