The stealership just doubled the price here in Toronto up to $160.00 or
so. It 'was' $80.00. Re: Emissions cannister
Canadian tire sells the air filters for the bottom for about $2.00.
I had to use a hammer and chisel to get mine out the first time, then the new filter just tucks back in. I moved mine up under my brake booster so it doesn't get muddy so fast. Re: Emissions cannister
Depends if it's just a plugged filter or the cannister is actually shot. If
it's just the filter, $2.00 like mike said. There are many people that run without it, but it is the gas tank vent and some of those things need to be taken into account if you run without it. I'm sure if you do a Google group search someone will have explained how to run without it. For example here's a great post from Mike on the subject 4 years ago http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...3307e868&rnum= 3 "Rod Gramlich" <rod.gramlich@ualberta.ca> wrote in message news:c4uoam$ies$1@tabloid.srv.ualberta.ca... > > "Mike Romain" <romainm@sympatico.ca> wrote in message > news:4072DB2F.B80627DF@sympatico.ca... > > The stealership just doubled the price here in Toronto up to $160.00 or > > so. NOTE: Vehicle runs/idles fine (a miracle for the 258 c/w rebuild of original carb :>) That is a bad purge valve. If you trace the PCV line to the back of the carb, make sure the elbow hasn't collapsed. Back of the carb there is a solenoid or T fitting. The solenoid can be tossed, it's a recall thing, you just use a T fitting. Off this a line goes to the top of the canister. At idle pinch this line to the canister closed. If the idle changes the canister purge is messed up. Mike 86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail in '00 88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT's |

As per mike's post:
If the purge valve goes bad, then it basically shuts down your PCV system, messing the idle and usually causing oil to blow into the air filter through the valve cover intake line. BINGO !!!!! That is my precise symptom. I just assumed the old canister had finally packed it in, causing PCV circulation to fail. I'll have to get my manual out and find this valve.

Mike,
I pulled the EGR last night, and discovered it full of grease, mud, carbon, leaves ................ to name a few. I completely cleaned it up, and reinstalled (using a high temp Si for gasket ....... since I destroyed old gasket in the process. NOTE that a mech. friend of mine tells me to make that a temp fix/gasket, and replace with proper metal clad gasket ASAP). I also pulled the 'delay valve' *between EGR and PCV** (as my Haynes decribes it) and it seems OK (it's not stuck shut at least ..... and it's warm here now :>), so I couldn't really test it properly - well I guess I could use the freezer :). I drove to work this am and there did not "seem" to be the lingering odor of gasoline fumes. Maybe it's wishful thinking ...... I'll have to give it a few runs to convince myself of that. The large hose from PCV to base of carb definitely appears slightly compression sucked/shrunk at the bend prior to carb fitting. tks, rod "Mike Romain" <romainm@sympatico.ca> wrote in message news:40732EEC.7B9526D6@sympatico.ca... > As per mike's post: > > If the purge valve goes bad, then it basically shuts down your PCV > system, messing the idle and usually causing oil to blow into the > air > filter through the valve cover intake line. > > > BINGO !!!!! Re: Emissions cannister
The PCV flow is metered to match the intake hose from the air filter and
the charcoal canister purge input. If the elbow has half collapsed, that can interfere enough to give you some oil blowing into the air filter. They are really touchy about that. Even a bad leak on the valve cover gaskets or grommets can affect the flow enough to spit oil. If you can pinch off the PCV line from the back of the carb to the canister and the idle doesn't change, then I would just change the air filter on the canister to make the canister flow right and fix that elbow up and then see what happens.
