Re: Electrical woes continue. Help? FIXED!!!

I will second the 'don't get Accel wires'.

Pieces of crap. The ends all broke off the first time I changed the
plugs. I used dielectric grease under the boots so they came off fine,
the metal clips mostly all stayed on the plugs and then in the
distributor cap when I went to change them.

I went OEM wires from Chrysler with an Accel SuperCoil in 2000 and I
cross water over my hood with the standing water at the bottom of my
headlights with no problems. 42" to the bottom of my headlights, I do
get a wet butt occasionally, but they have never let me down.

Re: Electrical woes continue. Help? FIXED!!!

The guy had to hook a jumper wire to do the test right. Did he know how
or do that? The excite to turn on the alternator comes from the
regulator so a dead regulator will show battery voltage at the
alternator.

You can jump the excite or field from the battery feed to just have the
alternator on, period. That can get you out of trouble sometimes. You
need a load to help not over charge the battery so lights and heater fan
on. Better over charge a battery and have to add some water than being
stuck way back in the middle of nowhere.

I dunno, dude. I didn't quiz him on the procedure before he did it.
I admitted my first mistake was believing them when they said my
alternator was bad. ;-)

Then that's probably what happened. I wish I'd gotten this free
advice earlier. Hey, I got what I paid for, right? :-) Thanks for
the information, seriously. I hope to not make the same mis-diagnosis
in the future. I woke up at 4:28am this morning so I'm going to bed
soon which means I'll be heading for the trails at about the time the
sun comes up tomorrow. Good night, y'all.

It's sometimes hard to determine whether it's the regulator or the
alternator unless you know the tricks. My rule of thumb has always been to
replace the cheapest part first: the regulator. If that doesn't do it, then
replace the alternator. It won't hurt to have a new regulator in that case
anyway. :-)
