electrical -- flasher and break lights - hooked together
I have a ground or something screwed up.
When I press the breaks, the blinkers light up, both on the dash, as well as front and rear lights (both left and right). it doses not flash, but is constant with the break, just like as if they were hooked up directly to the break lights. But the flashers don't work, I replaced the flasher relay, and still no flash, but they still come on when the break is presses. Honestly kind of handy in the garage, the front flashers light the way as I slow to a stop, but I need my flashers back, my arm is tiered form hand-signals. Can you point me in the right direction; I think a total re-wiring is not far off . . . but not now, After Duck Season 83 CJ 8, a work in progress http://hometown.aol.com/ebmvi/MyTJindex.html Take out the "XXX" to e-mail me |
Re: electrical -- flasher and break lights - hooked together
The brake lights use the bolts of the light fixtures for ground.
The running lights use a wire tagged to the body for ground. If either lose their grounds or a bulb breaks the right way, these systems can interfere with each other by either stealing a ground and/or lighting up the other bulbs. The only thing in common between the signals and brakes as far as I know is the signal switch itself. I think I would unplug the harness at the bottom of the steering column to eliminate the signal switch and see if the brakes work right. If it still messes up, then I would be looking for a short circuit or crossed wires. If I had a trailer light plug, I would start there. Re: electrical -- flasher and break lights - hooked together
Hi Evan,
Your problem is within the turn signal switch, it must be badly melted from a very bad short, to have made so many connections. Normally the power from the stop light switch travels to the turn signal system to be directed to the tail lights individually so one may be turned off during a signal to turn in that direction. Follow the harness back along the frame I think you'll find where it's shorted, maybe laying on the exhaust pipe. Or maybe the trailer socket is smashed. Re: electrical -- flasher and break lights - hooked together
Strangest thing, I was in the process of fallowed Mikes advise, had both
flasher and tail light fuses out, put them back in, and it started clicking (key out), messed with the hazard switch, and it all works right now, , , I have never once, used the hazard on this thing, no do I understand why it could be linked to the break? Damdest thing, , , I messed with the relays 10 times before I posted, Thanks any way . . . Like I said, a rewire probably cant wait to much longer 83 CJ 8, a work in progress http://hometown.aol.com/ebmvi/MyTJindex.html Take out the "XXX" to e-mail me |
