Thanks for all the replies. There is a nearby shop offering $35 brake
jobs (good place, owner is my wife's uncle). I might just go for that
and be done with it.

why not just spill a little fluid on the other side and call it even?

I agree that replacement is the best idea.
I wouldn't try to clean them by soaking them in a solvent as the material is
stuck onto the metal with glue.
When brake shoes were rivetted and made out of asbestos, I used to paint the
spillage with petrol then set fire to them - the flame burnt off the brake
fluid. Wouldn't try that now either.
