Dome lights
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has rigged up their own switch for the
dome lights. I would like to take my doors off but dont want to pull the fuse to shut the lights off. Can anyone answer these three questions. What wires would I have to tap into? Where are they located? What amp switch would I use? I have an 06 TJ. Thanks in advance. Gary |
Re: Dome lights
What's wrong with pulling number 4 fuse behind the whiskey chest? Just
don't forget that you will no longer have the door/headlight chime to remind you that you left your lights on. Make it a habit to push the light switch in when leaving the vehicle. The dome light should still work with a twist of the headlight switch. THere's a kit for doing exactly what you want from Quadratec, if I remember
correctly. But pulling the fuse is simple and costs nothing. Far easier is to just pull #4. This fuse is explicitly to disable dome lights when the doors are removed. What is so hard about it that would make you want to go to the work and expense of adding a special switch? Re: Dome lights
Why would you NOT want to pull the fuse?
Since you know there IS is a fuse, why not build a simple harness that plugs into the fuse holder and goes to a switch that you mount in a convenient spot, then back to the fuse holder. Your new harness should have a fuse holder in line. Now, you have an easy switch to flip that does the same thing as pulling the fuse, and leaves the vehicle in its normal condition so that all other circuits and stuff related to the doors works the same way. When you put the doors back on, simply flip the switch and return the fuse to the circuit. I suggest putting the switch in the glove box, or behind the glove box in a region near the fuse box. Then, you can take the doors off or put them back on, open the glove box and flip a switch. You pull the fuse once a season, or once in your life. The dome light still works by the light switch, but does not work by the doors. Re: Dome lights
No. the dome light still works by the light switch.
I think (but am not certain) that the Headlight Chime still works as well. Leave the headlamps on and the ignition off, and the chime sounds. Re: Dome lights
OK, since you can still turn on the dome via the switch apparently, I
figure you want the chimer to work. In that case I would go behind the door pillar and cut the wire to the door switch running two of the same gauge wires from there up to a DPST switch. The Double poles are one for each side. (Maybe it would be ok to use a single pole, but when in doubt, I separate them.) Then you simply hit the switch and the door switches are turned on or off. The Cherokee wiring diagram says it uses 20 gauge wires for the dome light and door switches. The switch should be rated a bit higher than the fuse. Auto parts stores and electronic stores sell 20 and 30 amp switches. Mike 86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail in '00 88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT's - Gone to the rust pile...
Re: Dome lights
My theory was that the same concern about battery life exists whether or not
the doors are installed. Based on that, I would design the circuit to give me an alert if the lights were on, the ignition was off, and the door was open. All of these conditions would mean to the vehicle that the operator was about to walk away with the lights still on, therefore there ought to be an alert that the operator can react to or ignore. If the doors were removed, then the only remaining trigger for the alert would be the lights on and the ignition off. This would not always be an accurate indicator of the vehicle being unoccupied and abandoned with the lights on, but it would be the only remaining way for the vehicle to know. And, since the vehicle wants to keep a battery charge for as long as possible, the probability of a false warning is better than no warning at all. I would place the fuse so that the dome light went off but the rest of the stuff still worked while the doors were removed. Did they actually designed it that way? I don't know, but that's how I would design it if it was my job to design that sort of thing.
