Dj5-F electrical problems

I recently aquired a 78 Dj5 F from a freind. It was running great a
year ago but he started going to school and didn't have time for it so
i got it. When i turn the key nothing happens not a squeek. the battery
is connected right (neg to engine block) and when i jump it the engine
cranks, so i know that the starter and battery work. Could someone help
me or give a little advise.

Be sure to clean both ends of both cables.

Re: Dj5-F electrical problems

I would first charge up the battery and on a 78 clean the battery
terminals and cable ends.

The battery might be totally dead. A 78 will run on just the alternator
once you jump start it.

Will the DJ start after it is cranked by jumping?

It's amazing what can happen to a vehicle that "was running great a year
ago". I am sure we have all seen them. Heck, it is amazing what can happen
to a vehicle that "was running great yesterday". On this vehicle I would
look at battery connections, as others have said, points or whatever passes
for an ignition system, and the contents of the carburetor bowl as a start.

Re: Dj5-F electrical problems

Need more info.

Will it crank without a boost?

Will it start with a boost?

If you look down the carb and give the throttle a shot, do you see gas
squirting?

Re: Dj5-F electrical problems

If he didn't get the vehicle running and drive it around the block once or
twice, he's not much of a mechanic. There is always the possibility that
this mechanic friend is responsible for what is happening (or not happening)
now. How much of this "24 years experience as an auto mechanic" was spent
wiping down new cars in the dealer prep bay?
