Re: Dana 44 AMC 20 compatibility
Hi CRWLR,
Both the 74 and 79 CJ's are narrow track aren't they?
The axles should be the same width.
I did the exact swap, although in doing a SOA, I didn't use the original
perches, so I am not positive about the perch width.

Re: Dana 44 AMC 20 compatibility
1) I used the same drive shaft for a while (went to a longer one for the
SOA).
2) You probably want to change the brake lines out any way.
3) Some of the older 44's had 11" bakes (mine did), so theoretically you
should see better braking.

Re: Dana 44 AMC 20 compatibility
Be careful with the brake issue. If the shoe/drum size is the same and the
wheel cylinder diameter is the same, should be okay. A larger brake on the
new axle could cause the back wheels to lock before the front resulting in a
loss of stability. If you've ever driven, or tried to drive a front wheel
drive car with studded tires just on the front on icy roads you'll know what
I mean. Applying the brakes for a seemingly normal stop and the next thing
you know the rear of the car is passing you. Brake size and master cylinder
and proportioning valves are all pretty carefully matched.
