Dana 35c gear oil used

I have a 95 yj with what I believe to be a Dana 35c. What weight lube
do I use. I have been told by a mech that it should use 75/140, but
Chiltons says 75w90. Do I have a limited slip? Do I need an additive?
I'm lost

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg,
Sounds like your mechanic knows something about your gears, like
they're not quite up to par.
Check to see if the limited slip tag saying use an additive is
still bolted to the cover. Jack up a rear wheel and see if you can turn
it by hand in neutral.

Does any one know if you use 75w140 vs 80w90 if foaming will occur?

Re: Dana 35c gear oil used

The synthetic 75w-140 will protect the gears from additional heat and stress
such as operation off-road driving or when towing over the dino derived
80w-90.

Both should have anti-foaming additives.

They are designed not to foam. I would use the 140 if your mechanic
said your differential is about to explode.

Can some one please tell me why the vent tube is putting out oil after
I drive 40 miles home from work? What would cause this? Bad rear end?
Did not start to do this until I had the local oil change place change
the rear diff oil.

Thanks

Normally there is a hose connect to the vent tube that loops over
the frame, to keep some of the water out. Sounds like yours is missing.
Use 90 weight only if you think your mechanic is full of sh*t.

It is coming out at the very back of the frame. The fuel inlet to the
tank is soaking wet. I believe the hose is in place. What I don't know
is why after driving for a while, why is it leaking? Pressure? temp?
wrong grade oil? I checked it tonight and its about a quarter inch from
the bottom of the drain hole. What is causing it to spit out after
driving a while?

Re: Dana 35c gear oil used

I am tomorrow, they used 75w140 and an additive. I don't tow with this
jeep. How would they know to use an additive?

It sounds like you have bad or incompatible oil or a bad mix of oil. The
manual for this vehicle, which I have, recommends Mopar Gear Oil (yeah,
whatever), 75W90 API-GL5 or 80W140 for towing. I am pretty sure I have some
kind of 80W90 in mine. They recommend a level one half inch below the fill
hole. I recommend a synthetic if you live where it is real cold. I can't
imagine why 75w140 vs 80w90 would cause foaming, unless your local oil
change place found a real cheap supplier.

I think maybe it is time to call them, and ask nicely what the hell they did
to your car.

Have you looked to see if you have water in your differential?
It'll look like a whipped up chocolate malt.
