About a year ago I replaced my rear axle with a Ford 8.8. I have nothing to
say about it but good things. They are relatively easy to find, just get
one from a '95 or new Ford explorer (it gets you rear disc brakes). It will
take most abuse you can give it. I've got an LT1 from a '94 Firebird with a
NV4500 and this only thing I've broken is the flange where the driveshaft
connects. And that broke only because of massive axle wrap (SOA). I've
since built a traction bar. There are millions of upgrades out there
because the same axle was used in Mustangs for a lot of years. The width
isn't really a problem. I'll send you a picture if you'd like so you can
see what it looks like.

No disrespect to you Bill, but while changing out the axle is it VERY simple
to convert this axle to a clipless design. Check summit, jegs, moser
engineering, etc. It is a matter of just pressing on a bearing and bolting
it on to the axle housing. Moser can also provide you any bolt pattern you
would like, if you decided to replace the front as well. I'd recommend them
for any axle work, as they were very helpful with me.

to convert this axle to a clipless design. Check summit, jegs, moser
engineering, etc. It is a matter of just pressing on a bearing and bolting
it on to the axle housing. Moser can also provide you any bolt pattern you
would like, if you decided to replace the front as well. I'd recommend them
for any axle work, as they were very helpful with me.

Use an 8.8 out of a mid-90's Explorer. Bolt pattern is the same, the axle might
be on the order of 3/4" narrower, not enough to get in a twist over, IMHO.
