Alright.. this one's frustrating me a bit. I have a 1996 Jeep Grand
Cherokee Limited 5.2 V8 with about 97,000 miles on it. I've had
relatively few problems with it, until I took it in recently to get
new tires and an alignment done.

Discount Tire did the tires first, and then took the Jeep next door to
the Brakes Plus (hey, it was convenient..), where they were supposed
to align the car. In addition, Brakes Plus found a leaking cv boot
and replaced it.

I went to pick up the car, and it barely started. I could inch my way
forward, but when my foot went off the gas, the car would die. It
will idle weakly and when the gas pedal is depressed heavily the
engine will respond, but when the pedal is released, the car dies.

I had never experienced anything like this before in the car. The
manager at Brakes Plus seems to think that it may be the fuel pump.

I have a few questions for some car saavy netziens, which I certainly
am NOT - One, do you think that his diagnosis is correct? He really
didn't do anything other than to step on the gas a few times and open
fuel the pressure valve (?), which he said seemed to be pumping gas
weakly.

My second, and more relevant question, is whether this failure is
possibly the result of something that was done to the car while it was
in the shop. I'm suspicious that something happened today -
statistically, it seems highly unlikely that this failure is simply
the result of a random occurrence, but I'm certainly open to others
suggestions.

I appreciate any and all feedback - including those that might tell me
I'm insane... ;)

http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html Something should show up
because the step motor should be able to maintain an idle. It is
possible the brake repair could be involved, as a problem with the YJ's
emergency cable recalls, some of their mechanics failed to reattach the
pump's ground cable, but that's a long shot.
