CJ5 in a Uhaul ?

I have my 81 CJ5, and I will be moving across country. I wanted to know if
anyone ever tried loading a CJ onto a U-Haul. I have another car that I am
planning to tow, and I wont have anyone else to drive the Jeep. As if that
would be fun to drive cross country. The Jeep width is only 5'5" and I am
sure I can get it up onto a 26' van. The deck is only 24" off the ground,
and I can back it up to my yard from the street, and just drive right in.
But are there wheel wells in the van that will get in the way, inside?
If anyone knows, please let me know.
Thanks, Brad

If it will fit inside and you're within the weight limits, should be ok.
Better see if U-Haul approves, however.

You'll need good luck if you're using U-Haul for anything, but to answer
your question, it depends on which truck you are getting. The large cube
type vans have no wheel wells (or very small humps that you could drive
over) inside the storage area, but the best thing to do would be to check
with the rental place you are going to use because there are different truck
and cube configurations, just like it says on their website.

Re: CJ5 in a Uhaul ?

How are you going to tie it down? There is nothing strong enough to attach
to, and even a framework made of 4x4s would rely on the corners of the box
to hold the jeep in place. Bad idea, in a wreck the jeep will come into the
cab with you, and just rolling down the highway will have it bouncing off of
the walls.

Good point. I may have to have it shipped out, or tow it and find someone
to drive my car.
Thanks,

I just keep thinking of the size of a duce and a half in the ARMY,
and knowing U-Haul has nothing like that, maybe in Rider they have
commercial trucks.

Re: CJ5 in a Uhaul ?

You are probably better off in a Ryder with one of their aluminum
car hualers. Better equipment, less hassle, very safe and
reliable haul. But they do require that you rent the truck and
trailer as a package.
