I'd suspect the Crankshaft Position Sensor first. Generally
a failing O2 sensor just causes the engine control to go to
open loop mode.

My understanding as well ... a failed O2 on my 96' 4.0 litre "should" cause
"start" mode meaning a rich setting ... and the symtoms would be real poor
mileage and eventually a clogged/carboned up/destroyed cat.
