Re: Cause and Effect
The two red wires in the WOT photo are the choke wires and plug.
Once heated up, the choke should be wide open. You can verify this with
the air filter off. Use your finger to make sure there is some load on
the choke plate holding it open. The plate shouldn't 'flop' around.
The engine must be running to test this.

Once heated up, the choke should be wide open. You can verify this with
the air filter off. Use your finger to make sure there is some load on
the choke plate holding it open. The plate shouldn't 'flop' around.
The engine must be running to test this.

Re: Cause and Effect
Diesel requires fuel supply that continues after the ignition
cuts off and usually a high idle. On some engines it is
more effort than it is worth to cut the fuel supply completely
and lower the idle without affecting driveability. You
may still have a slightly off low rpm idle adjust, dimly recall
rich is worse for diesel but been a long time. The old
Datsun that did this wouldn't run worth a rat if everything
was tuned to get rid of the diesel, so just got used to
shutting the engine off and let the clutch out in first gear
with brakes on. YMMV.

Re: Cause and Effect
Any oil spits in the air filter?
Double check that after driving it a bit or to work and back with the
new PCV valve.
Those oil caps just plain leak!
That is the only oil leak I have on my 86 CJ7 and the cap is only a
couple years old.
How does it idle now when warmed up?

Re: Cause and Effect
Carboned up from all the troubles he has been having will cause
dieseling too.... The plugs could just need a clean.
I would worry about that last, it should clear up with some decent
running.
The PCV valve being gutted means something, someone was likely trying to
fix a blown canister or something, but one step at a time.
Don't want to toss 20 things at once at the poor guy.

blown canister... do I even want to know! How do I tell if I have a blown

Aka "the Italian tune-up".

Essentially what I hoped to have said...ignore the diesel unless
it gets truly bad, just use the clutch to nuke the engine.

Re: Cause and Effect
Let us know how it is running with a new PCV valve, especially at idle
and after you drive it a bit check the air filter for spits of oil
coming in from that PCV filter element on the side of the air filter.
Jeeps have some anti pollution parts that can cause headaches and are
easy fixes if you know what to look for, but lets see if you 'need' to
worry about them first....
