Catalytic Convertor
 

I'm in need of a new converter for my '97 ZJ. The old one is rattling like
crazy. Am I better off getting a direct fit replacement, or can I get a
universal fit?

Whats a good brand to get?
Where's a good place to get it?

I just go to a good local (non midas) shop and have them slap a high-flow
cat in. about 100$ (possibly more now, but should be close)

Aftermarket cats last about five years.

I just go to a good local (non midas) shop and have them slap a high-flow
cat in. about 100$ (possibly more now, but should be close)

Aftermarket cats last about five years.

I checked a couple of local shops and they wanted over $220! I ended up
buying a direct fit replacement Magnaflow on ebay for $94 shipped.

buying a direct fit replacement Magnaflow on ebay for $94 shipped.

converter that is on my Jeep right now, because it has lasted twelve years.

five years, as Doug says. The math comes out slightly in favor of an OEM
converter for $220, not counting the PITA factor of replacing it twice, and
assuming that you can get one for that.

That $220 probably isn't a factory converter. A factory converter for a '97
ZJ is about $200 itself (not including installation.

old cat.

Don't forget to hang onto your old cat. Call a metal salvage yard and
see how much they will pay you for the platinum it contains.
(not sure exactly how much, but IIRC it's worth the trip and better
than throwing it in the trash).

It was $220 for an aftermarket converter. If this lasts five years...that

converter thefts around here lately...so someone must be buying old ones.
