They should, but they typically won't.

If you mean the recall that followed an EPA lawsuit, which extended the
warranty to 120K/12 years, the local dealer wouldn't honor it for my
1997 TJ when the catalytic converter failed just like the EPA said.
The dealer can easily look up your VIN on the Daimler-Chrysler Web site
and can tell you the recall history and pending recalls on your vehicle.

In my case the recall didn't get recorded on the corporate records and
Web site (even though I had the recalled defect), and that was that as
far as the dealers are concerned.

In reading the EPA settlement, it sounds like it only covered an absurd
portion of the TJs having the problem, such as the 2.5L engine but not the
4.0L engine. My impression was that DC had swindled the EPA (and us) out
of DC taking responsibility for many (if not most) actual cases.

But with some careful shopping, you're not out a huge amount of money:

The Magnaflow 23227 kit consists of the converter and the upstream pipe
that mates to the manifold. Both stainless. All for $93 shipped on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=170055751402

The installation is a bit of a chore with the skid plate and all, but
if you're not a do-it-yourselfer, your labor bill should come in between
$100 to $200.

I DID read the recall, and talked to the service managers at two
different dealerships. If the cat was rattling WHEN THE JEEP WAS
BROUGHT IN they would replace it, if it doesn't rattle they wouldn't
replace it. Doesn't matter if it worked or not, the only question was
if it rattled.

If they would have replaced the cat for no charge I would have brought
the Jeep in, no telling what they would have wanted to charge me to get
my Jeep back working no better than it already was.
