The switch is a pretty simple one with a curved copper strap that fatigues
with time.
I was to cheap to fork out $4.80 for a new switch so I shimmed it with a
sliver from a toothpick.

Either/or basically. The park brake switch is a ground on switch with
one wire right at the back of it. It can be unplugged and the light
goes off.
The other switch is on the combination valve and that indicates an
uneven pressure between the front and rear brake systems. One could
have a leak or air.

Open your brake reservoir and fill the empty one. Bleed brakes, and
finish again at the rear axle, bleeding slowly, have the person
pressurizing the pedal tell you the instant the light goes out. If light
goes out and back on, bleed the front axle slower.
