AMC V8 rear main seal
Hey Everyone,
After i finally got the last project done, i fired up the '82
Scrambler to get it out of the garage. Now the 360's rear main seal
that was a slow leak turned into a gusher. So last night i dropped the
starter, oil pan and bearing cap. Replaced the thing and had oil back
in it in under two hours. Refill with oil.... still leaks. Not as
bad, but still pisses me off! What am i doing wrong? I coated both
halves with oil, the rest seems pretty no-brainer. I'm covered there
;) It's definately the seal, not the pan. I took off the access cover
to the Torqflight 727, and it's dripping inside the plate, not down the
front outside (if that makes any sense).
Thanks,
Don W

Re: AMC V8 rear main seal
I would be wiping the back of the intake and heads with a clean cloth to
see if the oil is coming from up top.
Maybe you need to plastigauge the rear bearing? If it is too worn, a
new seal won't stop the leaks.
Did you use a gasket maker where the ends of the seal halves meet?

Re: AMC V8 rear main seal
There is a small area on the cap right next to the seal that need a
dab of silicone:
http://web.archive.org/web/200410260...w/V8-block.jpg
Not nearly as critical as a Chevy's cap where it may leak on all four
sides. Anyway, if the oil galley and drain is clear in the slinger area,
then the oil shouldn't get anywhere near the seal. Only if there is
crankcase pressure due to a clogged Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve
or it's hoses and connection to the intake manifold. There are two
lifter galleys and the camshaft, plugged there, but I've never heard of
them being a problem.

Re: AMC V8 rear main seal
Your bearings could be worn causing the crank to drop and therefore causing
the rear seal to leak. I'm diagnosing the same problem in mine right now.
