AMC 20 Seals - Questions?

I'm thinking (again) that I need to replace the seals in the AMC 20
rear axle of my 83 CJ7 (wide track).

I understand there are two (2) seals - an "inner" that helps keep the
grease/lube in the pumpkin, and an "outer" that protect the bearings
and keeps crap from going into the axle tube, and lube inside the
tube, etc

I know the outer seal is between the bearing and axle flange (mine are
1-piece Moser's - not the stock two-piece) and the bearing must be
pressed off/on the repalce the seal.

But the inner can be replaced after pulling the axle, etc - WITHOUT
pressing the bering etc

Questions:
In the groups experience - how often has seal failure been the outer
seal vs. the inner seal? In other words, which seal is more prone to
failure inner or outer?
The seal leakage is evidenced by leakage and dust build-up etc on the
outside of the brake backing plate etc - the brake wheel cylinders are
not the source of the leakage - they have already been checked)

How do I re-fill the pumpkin with lube etc since there is no fill/
drain plugs on the round pumkin cover (Thanks AMC!)

I'm running a full on Detroit locker in the rear. Standard gear oil?
Or does it need an additive ... a la a limited slip diff? (I'm
thinking standard gear lube - of the approproate weight - is used)

Many thanks

Lynn in Vancouver
(getting ready for the annual pilgrimage to TDS)

Re: AMC 20 Seals - Questions?

Although I can only answer one question, I will give it, fill diff by fill
plug located in the front. My inner seals were replaced when I had my
Detroit put in and I replaced the outter about the same time when I went to
one peice axles. But I do have a question, what is TDS, something jeep?
Asking as I am in Powell River.
