AMC 20 question..
Seems I have an axle bearing that has some play in the rear, thinking it
will need replacing. If I grab the wheel it moves up and down and slides in
and out also.
After taking the hub off the then the outer oil seal, does the axle really
just pull right out with a slide hammer? I guess id thought there was more
holding the axle into the housing.
Kind of what I have gathered from the repair manual I have and replacing the
outer oil seal on the opposite side.
The axle also has some movement in and out of the carrier as well..does this
sound bad or just part of something that will be remedied when replacing
the axle bearing
Where will I be able to take it to have the bearing installed...manual says
it will need special installation tools.
Thanks

Hi Steve,
Did you also take the four bolts that hold the retainer and backing
plates? There probably is some shims in there to remove, that will
tighten up your bearings:

much to pop the outer race with a lose chain:

hub, your axle is history: http://www.----------.com/amc20hub.jpg

Re: AMC 20 question..
Sliding in and out is probably okay, mine do that. Up and down is worrisome
though. On an up-note, this would be a good time to consider one-piece axles
from Moser or Superior Gear.
