Haven't rebuilt a generator with brushes but I've rebuilt an old
dremmel and a mixer that used them. Bloody hard to find brushes
these days.
As for alternators, I just take them to a local shop and swap out
for a rebuilt. Long time ago I needed a rebuid but they didn't
have one in stock. So they offered to teach me how to rebuild it
and all I had to do was pay for the parts. :) That was a no-brainer.

Brushes for the slip rings. They don't wear down nearly as fast as
commutator brushes in a generator.
