'97 XJ with pinging noise
Howdy,
I have a '97 XJ with about 87k on it. Ever since I bought it (new) it starts a tinty pinging sound when under stress , going up hill or pushing it. I've asked the dealer and the people who work on it several times throughout the years about it. They basically said its bad gas but I don't believe them..it happens with all types of gas...sometimes (rarely) it does not happen but most of the time it does..others have told me my plugs are fouling..use the stock ones..etc. Bottom line: problem is still not solved..when going up hill or trying to pass I get a pinging sound..if anyone can give me guidance ...it would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Deparko |
Re: '97 XJ with pinging noise
Sounds like spark knock. You say it happens with all kinds of gas, do you mean
brands or grades? If you have tried different grades does it do it less with better (higher octane) gas? My Cherokee with the 6 spark knocks pretty badly with regular but with midrange hardly does it at all. I also noticed that after changing to platinum plugs the pinging went down. Re: '97 XJ with pinging noise
Switch to a major gasoline, maybe run couple of tanks of their top
grade with their stronger additives, design to clean the carbon build up you have added over the years of using cheap fuel. Re: '97 XJ with pinging noise
Some things you can do:
1. I just heard of a product called BK-44. http://shopping.yahoo.com/b_fuel-system_20415971 I heard this is very good stuff. 2. Raise octane level. 3. Run cooler plugs.
