I made a cradle to hold mine vertically. The top rests on the rear
corners in a curved, carpeted cradle. The rear window is between the
cradle so no weight is on that. The cradle frame has casters so I can
roll it around the garage. Storing vertically avoids the stress
problems people have been mentioning above in this thread and it takes
minimal space. Sorry don't have any pictures right now, top is still
on the jeep for the winter, I hope my explanation is clear enough

They sell a hardtop storage rack in 4 wheel hardware like what you
described. One of these day's i'll build something.

I just built a hardtop cart out of two 1000lb mover's dollies, a 2x6,
and some angle brackets. I haven't taken my hardtop off for the summer
yet, but if it works as planned, I'll have saved over $100 from what
the Jeep stores want for the HOSS or similar carts. :)
