I've always tapped them in with a seal tool until they bottom out which, so
far, has worked fine for me.

I think you'll find a ridge to drive the seal against, like this
picture of a reverse Dana 44:

don't rent the tool, find a pipe that size so you may drive it straight
on like a wheel seal.
