Tread-depth is a non-issue when it comes to substandard tires. When I
say "put the best you got on the back", that means the best quality
tire, regardless of tread depth. Air them all up to OEM specs as a
minimum if running the street for safety.
Back in the old days, mismatching radial with bias-ply tires was
suicidal. These days, it's not so much of an issue, BUT you can expect
very poor handling. I don't recommend it.
This all reminds me of a wreck I passed (and photographed) 3 years ago.
A guy in a Thunderbird flew around me in the pouring rain at about 70
mph. in a 55. As he rounded the next curve, he lost control and ran
head on into a light delivery truck, instantly killing him and his 3
children. CHP couldn't believe what they saw: all four tires were BALD.

Just matched up all 4 bfg's and the handling is much better, but it is
still "sloppy" when turning. doesnt wander anymore. next is the ball
joints then the alignment.

Ah, that would just be the crappy BFG tires. I threw all 5 brand-new
BFG's away with 100 miles on them when I bought the TJ. Actually, I
would have almost paid you to take them off my hands...they were that
bad. Hopefully the front-end repair makes it reasonably safe to drive.

What "crappy" BFG tires are you talking about. I had 5 - 31 x 10.5 x 15 BFG
All Terrain TA's on my '02 Wrangler and I thought they were great tires.
