In that case I'd suspect the clutch is shot. 4lo requires less torque
to turn and therefore less power through the clutch and transmission.

I would be looking at the tranny and engine mounts very carefully,
especially the drivers side engine mount.

When one of these goes bad or loose, it can shift the tranny physically
so the shifter hits the body. When you go to 4 low, the extra torque
twist can be just enough to let reverse slip in.

This goes double if you have a body lift on it.

Fill the clutch reservoir with brake fluid, then find it's leak inside
the firewall from it's push rod or from the slave drip at bottom of
bellhousing.
You don't have one of those funning body lifts that shifted blocking the
linkage?
